Nyarlathotep by Girhasha Nyarlathotep by Girhasha
Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos.

"Then down the wide lane betwixt the two columns a lone figure strode; a tall, slim figure with the young face of an antique Pharaoh, gay with prismatic robes and crowned with a golden pshent that glowed with inherent light. Close up to Carter strode that regal figure; whose proud carriage and smart features had in them the fascination of a dark god or fallen archangel, and around
whose eyes there lurked the languid sparkle of capricious humour. It spoke, and in its mellow tones there rippled the wild music of Lethean streams."
H. P. Lovecraft, "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath"

"And it was then that Nyarlathotep came out of Egypt. Who he was, none could tell, but he was of the old native blood and looked like a Pharaoh. The fellahin knelt when they saw him, yet could not say why. He said he had risen up out of the blackness of twenty-seven centuries, and that he had heard messages from places not on this planet."
H. P. Lovecraft, "Nyarlathotep"

"...pray to all space that you may never meet me in my thousand other forms. Farewell, Randolph Carter, and beware; for I am Nyarlathotep, the Crawling Chaos."
H. P. Lovecraft, "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath"

Nyarlathotep's  most deadly form, as he walks among men as a man,. and works in the Pentagon, to deceive mankind.

It's interesting to see just how much the Crawling Chaos varies in media. One one hand there's the Persona 2 incarnation, which is as much as you might expect, being pure Nightmare Fuel and the manifestation of humanity's darkness and all that. And on the other side of the corner, there's Nyaruko...

Excellent! I haven't seen too many Nyarlathotep portraits that look like a human. You did a great job here, and really captured his imperious essence.

I like this. Nyarlathotep as a character is not what you expect when Carter meets him. He strikes me in this painting as one who probably recognizes Carter as capable of usurping him if the chance arose, hence his consideration, followed by a somewhat belligerent act at the end. The face is puzzled, the demeanour intrigued, the slightly raised arm perhaps an involuntary movement to ward off a half-threat, or perhaps resting on a knee as he watched the seemingly doomed Carter leave, wondering what Carter would do next. One wonders what this sublime, amoral creature would look like when he seals Carter's fate - perhaps the same, but with a more meditative air.

I don't think Nyarlathotep tried to doom Carter but rather I think he tricked him so he will wake up and leave the dreaming world which in turn will destroy Carter's sun filed city forcing the elder gods to come back to Kadath.

Nice. I think he should look more smug then angry... but.

He's like fire; hot and warm to cuddle up to, but dangerous and likely to burn you.

Not really cruel or condescending... 'chaotic' would be a better word, seeing as in every story in which he features we see a different side of him - beneficent, savagely playful, sardonic, wise, deadly, reverent, bestial, unknowable. In fact, the Other Gods, of which he is one, are the beings to whom the Elder Gods of earth and other worlds make petition when they feel they've been wronged in some way.

Not really. He doesn't ever 'devour' anything, and if people's minds are harmed by his presence, that's a by-product of their own ignorance.

Hmm... Evil in the terms of his victims, but not to all others. He is a complex character, I especially like how he is portrayed in The Dream Quest Of Unknown Kadath. He isn't feared for being evil, rather for the power he has. Anyways, I really like this piece.

Yes, precisely. I find it silly how people twist Lovecraft's conception of a chaotic (and rather pessimistic) universe into something that is EVIL EVIL EVIL. It's just silly.

I feel almost sad when I read Lovecraft's Dream Cycle stories, because they seem to be his attempt to create meaning out of a world that he thought of as cold, drab and uncaring. He was a good friend and a wonderful correspondent, but he was a very, very dissatisfied person. I think his real-life problems may have troubled him much more than any horrors he could have dreamed up.

He certainly was a one of a kind individual, and he's definitely my favorite fantasy author. I have yet to find another author who's stories are so... fantastic, imaginative, grim, and so profoundly beautiful. His stories have always been a welcome escape for me, into a world full of forbidden cults and wondrous secrets. I feel the same as you do concerning his personal life, and it is my belief that a key factor that contributed to his stories beautiful dark atmosphere was his outlook on life. He was a dreamer, dreaming of places he'd rather be than in his life, I suppose. In any case, H.P. Lovecraft was an author of near unparalleled skill, and it is hard for me to be satisfied with stories of other authors after reading his many stories.

My suggestion to you - if this fictional world affects you so deeply, find a way to add to it. H.P. Lovecraft shared it with Robert E. Howard - who used it as a base to write Conan the Barbarian - Clark Ashton Smith, Frank Belknap Long, and many others, all of whom added their own elements to a world that shifted and changed, but retained much of the same sort of 'soul'. Read their works, read them deeply, and then start writing when you feel you are ready and you have that same morass of secrets, cults, grim truths and fantastic cities inside yourself.

Also, I highly suggest you read Oscar Wilde's 'The Fisherman and His Soul'. The accounts of the detached soul's journeys have much of the same flavor of fantasticism and forbidden truths.

I'd love to talk more about this sort of thing with you. :)

It's quite nice to find somebody else who enjoys Lovecraft's work as I do. I have actually taken to writing little notes in a journal lately, bits and bobs of possible storylines and such. Thank you for the author suggestions, next time I'm on Amazon or at a book store I'll be sure to search for some works by them. Anywho, that little notebook is simply full of premature ideas, this I know, but I'm sure if I, as you said, continued to read into the genre then my ideas may become more refined. Time will tell, I guess. I am curious, when did you read or hear about H.P. Lovecraft?

You captured a fair bit of emotion in his expression he's a very angry looking fellow. Though with Nyarlathotep I always imagined it more smug than angry.

Nice work.
